Petrifying Spores
Cursed, toxic fungal spores are growing inside your body, slowly turning you into stone. The spores grant you some abilities:
- Mycelial Armor: when you are attacked, you may allow the growing spores inside you to further stiffen your flesh in order to protect you. You gain the ability to cast the shield spell at any time. Whenever you do so, you must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or increase your Spore Growth level by 1.
- Lesser Petrification: as an action, you may attempt to halt a creature that you can see within 30 feet. The target must make a Constitution saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier. On a failed save, the target's muscles stiffen and its speed is reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn. Each time you use this power, you must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or increase your Spore Growth level by 1.
- Greater Petrification: the mycelia pulse and writhe beneath your skin and pass into the flesh of another. As an action, you attempt to petrify a creature you touch. The target must save as though afflicted by the flesh to stone spell. You must maintain touch with the creature while it is saving; if you release contact, the effect will end. However, concentration is not necessary, and if the creature fails three Constitution saving throws and is turned to stone, the effect is immediately permanent. Using this power, whether or not the target is petrified, immediately increases your Spore Growth level by 1.
Spore Growth Level
As the spores inside of you develop, your Spore Growth level will increase. It begins at 1 and can go up to 5. This level affects both when you are likely to turn to stone and, to some degree, your appearance.
Each time you complete a long rest, the effects of the curse may manifest. Roll your Spore Growth level's die; if it is a one, you are restrained and have begun turning to stone. You must make a series of Constitution saving throws against a DC of 9 + your spore growth level. Keep rolling untill you have a total of either three successes or three failures. If you roll three total successes, the effect subsides and you are no longer restrained. If you roll three total failures, you are turned to stone and subjected to the petrified condition. Only greater restoration or stronger magic can remove this petrification.
The spore growth level dice and typical associated physical appearances are:
| Spore Growth Level | Die | Appearance | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | d100 | You appear normal. There are no physical indications of the spores. | |
| 2 | d20 | You appear more exhausted, and people may suggest you rest or believe you are ill. | |
| 3 | d12 | The white strains of mycelium are visible beneath your skin in some places on your body. They may or not be concealable. | |
| 4 | d8 | Your entire body is striated with the fibers of mycelia, and patches of your skin are now visibly made of stone. | |
| 5 | d4 | You appear to be a living sculpture, and anyone who sees you will assume you are a construct of some kind. You may also have several small mushrooms sprouting from your body; people who see these will likely believe you are spreading the miasma and flee from you. |
